The 2024 Tesla Model S is a carryover: same body, same HW4 computer, same camera-only sensor set as a late-2023 car. That sounds dull, but it gives used buyers something the earlier refresh years do not: a short recall list and no mid-year hardware split to decode.
Why a quiet year is good for used buyers
Each of the refreshed years before it changed something during production. The 2022 Tesla Model S lost radar in February. The 2023 Tesla Model S switched to HW4 around March and lost ultrasonic sensors during the year. A 2024 has none of that guesswork. Every car has:
- HW4 Autopilot computer and AMD Ryzen infotainment
- No radar, no ultrasonic sensors (camera-based Park Assist)
- Heat pump
- 48 A (11.5 kW) onboard charger and 250 kW Supercharging peak
- Yoke or round wheel, both offered from the factory
Prices held at $74,990 for the dual motor and $89,990 for the Plaid (Edmunds) until December 2024, when Tesla raised US prices by $5,000 to $79,990 and $94,990. That rise landed on the 2025 cars, which is part of why used 2024s look like good value next to them.
Dual Motor or Plaid: range and running costs
| Trim | EPA range | Efficiency | Home AC max | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model S (Dual Motor AWD) | 402 mi | 122 MPGe | 11.5 kW | $74,990 |
| Plaid (19 in wheels) | 359 mi | 107 MPGe | 11.5 kW | $89,990 |
| Plaid (21 in wheels) | 320 mi | 96 MPGe | 11.5 kW | $89,990 |

The EPA listing changed for 2024. The dual motor is now 402 miles at 122 MPGe, a touch below the 405 quoted for 2021 to 2023 but more efficient. The Plaid is 359 miles on 19 in wheels and 320 on 21 in wheels.
That spread shows up on your power bill, not just the range meter:

The arithmetic for the dual motor: 33.7 kWh per gallon-equivalent / 122 MPGe = 27.6 kWh per 100 miles. A thousand miles is 276 kWh, and 276 x $0.1831 = $50.54. The Plaid on 21s uses 35.1 kWh per 100 miles, so the same 1,000 miles costs about $64. Over 12,000 miles a year that gap is around $165. For your own rate, see how much a full charge costs.
The Plaid keeps Tesla's claimed 1.99 s 0-60 (with one-foot rollout); Edmunds measured 2.3 s on its test car. If you want the speed, the 19 in wheel car gives up 43 miles of rated range to the dual motor; the 21 in car gives up 82.

What to do about each, as a buyer:
| Campaign | Issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 25V002000 | Computer circuit board could short, losing the rearview camera | Software installed; if the camera ever failed, the computer may have been replaced |
| 24V967000 | Driver air bag could tear on deployment | Service visit record |
| 25V172000 | Wrong horn pad on the air bag, horn may not sound | Service visit record, and test the horn |
| 23V743000 | Wrong air bag after a yoke or wheel replacement | Only if the steering was swapped |
| 24V554000 | Hood latch might not detect an open hood | Over-the-air, already fixed on updated cars |
| 24V376000 | Seat belt warning might not work for the driver | Over-the-air, already fixed on updated cars |
Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you hand over money. NHTSA has not crash-rated the 2024 Model S. Owner complaints are low:

Home charging for a 2024
| How you charge | Speed |
|---|---|
| Wall Connector at 48 A (11.5 kW, 60 A breaker) | up to 41 mi of range per hour |
| NEMA 14-50 outlet, Mobile Connector at 32 A | about 27 mi per hour |
| Regular 120 V outlet | 2 to 3 mi per hour |
| Empty to full, largest pack (about 95 kWh) | about 9 hours at 11.5 kW |
Rates scale Tesla's published Wall Connector table for this model; older cars and cold batteries charge slower. Times are estimates.
A Wall Connector on a 60 A breaker gives the full 48 A and about 41 miles of range per hour. Most owners do not need that every night: at 41 mi/hr, a 60-mile day takes under an hour and a half to replace. If your panel is tight, a 40 A circuit at 32 A (about 27 mi/hr) or a 14-50 outlet does the same job overnight.
The full-speed setup per Tesla's manual is 6 AWG 90 C copper on a 75 C-rated 60 A breaker. Have a licensed electrician check your panel's spare capacity and pull the permit. Our guide to wiring a Wall Connector covers what the job involves.
2024 against the years either side
| 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autopilot computer | HW3 or HW4 | HW4 | HW4 |
| Ultrasonic sensors | Some cars | None | None |
| Dual motor EPA range | 405 mi | 402 mi | 410 mi |
| Plaid EPA range (19 in) | No entry found | 359 mi | 348 mi |
| NHTSA recall campaigns | 13 | 6 | 2 |
| Dual motor list price (Edmunds) | $74,990 | $74,990 | $79,990 |
The 2025 Model S adds 8 miles of rated range and has fewer recalls listed so far, partly because it is newer. For the whole lineup, see the best and worst Model S years.
Buying a 2024 Model S: common questions
What changed on the 2024 Model S?
Very little. Edmunds lists no significant model-year changes, and Tesla updates cars continuously rather than by model year. The EPA figures moved: the dual motor is now listed at 402 miles and 122 MPGe, and the Plaid at 359 miles on 19 in wheels and 320 on 21s. Hardware is the same HW4, camera-only setup as late 2023.
What is the range of a 2024 Model S Plaid?
The EPA rates the 2024 Plaid at 359 miles on 19 in wheels and 320 miles on 21 in wheels. That is lower than the 396 miles listed for the 2022 Plaid on 19s, which reflects a different EPA listing rather than a smaller battery. Real-world range drops further in cold weather and at sustained highway speed.
How many recalls does the 2024 Model S have?
Six, as of October 2026. Two were fixed over the air (seat belt warning chime and hood latch detection). One combines software with a possible part swap: 25V002000, where a computer circuit board could short and kill the rearview camera. Three need a service visit for air bag parts. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov to see what remains open.
How much does it cost to charge a 2024 Model S?
At home, about $50 per 1,000 miles for the dual motor at the July 2026 US average of 18.31 cents/kWh, using its EPA rating of 122 MPGe. A Plaid on 21 in wheels costs about $64 for the same distance. A full charge from near empty on a 60 A Wall Connector circuit takes about 9 hours.
Is the 2024 Model S HW4?
Yes. HW4 entered Model S production around March 2023, so 2024 cars have it. They also have no radar and no ultrasonic parking sensors; parking aids are camera-based. You can confirm the computer under Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information on the car's screen.
