2022 Tesla Model X: recalls, radar and the yoke, sorted for used buyers

The first full year of the refreshed Model X is fast, roomy and comfortable. It also carries a long recall list and a mid-year hardware change you should know about.

The 2022 Tesla Model X has 22 recalls on file with NHTSA, and six of them needed a service visit. One of those six, for a missing body bracket behind the second row, ended with Tesla replacing affected vehicles outright. Start any 2022 purchase by running the VIN.

This was the first full model year of the refreshed Model X: yoke, wide center screen, AMD Ryzen infotainment computer, 250 kW Supercharging and the 1,020 hp Plaid option. Mid-February 2022 is the one hardware split inside the year.

Buy or skip?Buy one with a clean recall record. The 2022 Model X has 22 recalls, but 16 were over-the-air fixes; the six that needed a technician cover air bags, seat belts, a yoke swap and a missing body bracket. Cars built before mid-February 2022 have radar, later ones are camera-only. Expect 348 miles of EPA range from the Long Range and 48 A home charging.

The 16 software recalls, briefly

These were delivered over the air, so any car that has been online since has them. Grouped by what they touched:

  • Cameras and screens: 22V296000 stopped the infotainment computer overheating during fast charging, which could reboot it and blank the rearview camera. 26V283000 (May 2026) addressed a delayed rear camera image.
  • Air bags and belts: 22V843000 recalibrated the restraint control module; 22V045000 and 24V376000 fixed seat belt reminders.
  • Doors, windows and hood: 22V702000 (window auto-reverse), 23V862000 (door locks could release in a crash), 24V554000 (hood latch sensing).
  • Other: a heat pump valve error that weakened windshield defrosting (22V050000), Boombox muting the pedestrian warning sound (22V063000, 22V235000), a low brake fluid warning that might not show (23V679000), an undersized brake and ABS warning font (24V051000), and three Autopilot and FSD Beta campaigns (22V037000, 23V085000, 23V838000).

Radar or Tesla Vision: the February 2022 line

Timeline of 2022 Tesla Model X changes: refreshed deliveries, radar removal in February 2022, recalls and the June price rise
The radar cutoff in mid-February 2022 is the hardware line inside this model year.

Cars built before mid-February 2022 have forward radar. After that, North American Model S and X went camera-only. When Tesla Vision arrived it capped Autosteer at 80 mph and used a longer minimum following distance, per InsideEVs' report at the time.

Every 2022 still has ultrasonic parking sensors (Tesla dropped them from S and X during 2023) and the HW3 Autopilot computer. HW4 starts with early-2023 builds, covered on the 2023 Tesla Model X page.

Living with the yoke

Steering is the top complaint area in NHTSA's 2022 records: 38 of the first 87 complaints, out of 127 total as of October 2026. Edmunds called the yoke the largest pain point of the refreshed car and said touch buttons in place of stalks make lane changes more distracting.

If you don't want a yoke, either find a car already converted, with recall 23V743000 closed, or ask Tesla service whether a swap is available for that car and what it costs.

127 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 Model X. Most frequent areas (approximate order): steering; unknown or other; electrical system; suspension; forward collision avoidance; air bags. Source: NHTSA complaints database.

Range and the Plaid wheel choice

EPA range by trim for the 2022 Tesla Model X
EPA-rated range for each 2022 Model X version. Real-world range is lower in cold weather and at highway speed.

The Long Range is rated at 348 miles. The Plaid gives up 15 miles on 20-inch wheels (333) and 37 on 22-inch wheels (311). If you are cross-shopping years, the 2021 Model X range section explains why the original Long Range Plus was rated higher.

Prices moved fast. Long Range cars started at $99,990 at first delivery in October 2021, and by June 2022 Tesla charged $120,990 for the Long Range and $138,990 for the Plaid.

TrimEPA rangeEfficiencyHome AC maxPrice (USD)
Long Range348 mi33 kWh/100 mi11.5 kW$99,990
Plaid (20in wheels)333 mi34 kWh/100 mi11.5 kW$119,990

Charging a 2022 at home and on trips

The refreshed car accepts 48 A, or 11.5 kW. On a Wall Connector with a 60 A breaker, that adds about 35 miles of range per hour, and a full charge from empty takes roughly 9 to 10 hours. A 40 A breaker (32 A output) adds about 23 miles per hour, which is enough for many commutes; Tesla's breaker table lists every step, and our guide to wire and breaker sizing explains the wiring.

How you chargeSpeed
Wall Connector at 48 A (11.5 kW, 60 A breaker)up to 35 mi of range per hour
NEMA 14-50 outlet, Mobile Connector at 32 Aabout 23 mi per hour
Regular 120 V outlet2 to 3 mi per hour
Empty to full, largest pack (about 100 kWh)about 9.5 hours at 11.5 kW

Rates scale Tesla's published Wall Connector table for this model; older cars and cold batteries charge slower. Times are estimates.

On the road, the 2022 can take up to 250 kW on a V3 or V4 Supercharger. Away from Tesla stations it can use the CCS1 adapter for other networks; see using other fast-charging networks.

2022 Model X owner and buyer questions

How many recalls does the 2022 Tesla Model X have?

NHTSA lists 22 campaigns for the 2022 Model X as of October 2026. Sixteen were software updates sent over the air. Six needed a service visit: front curtain air bags, a missing second-row body bracket, front seat belt anchors, air bags after a yoke swap, a driver air bag that may tear, and a horn pad air bag. Check each by VIN.

Does the 2022 Model X have radar?

Only cars built before mid-February 2022. After that Tesla removed radar from North American Model S and X and switched them to camera-only Tesla Vision, which at the time capped Autosteer at 80 mph and used a longer minimum following distance. The build date on the door jamb label tells you which side of the line a car falls on.

What is the range of a 2022 Tesla Model X?

The EPA rated the 2022 Long Range at 348 miles and the Plaid at 333 miles on 20-inch wheels or 311 on 22-inch wheels. Those are new-car figures. Real range drops in cold weather and at sustained highway speeds, so check the full-charge estimate on any used car rather than relying on the rating, and ask how often it was charged to 100%.

Can you replace the yoke on a 2022 Model X?

Yes, owners have swapped the yoke for a round steering wheel, but the air bag must match the wheel. Recall 23V743000 covers 2021 to 2024 Model X cars where the wrong driver air bag may have been fitted during a swap. If a used 2022 has a round wheel, ask for the service invoice and confirm the recall is closed.

Does the 2022 Model X have ultrasonic sensors?

Yes. Tesla began removing ultrasonic parking sensors from its cars in October 2022 but said Model S and X would follow in 2023, so 2022 Model X cars still have them. That gives you the sensor-based parking distance display. The 2023 model year is where some cars arrive without them.
