The 2024 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD is EPA-rated at 310 miles, 20 fewer than the 2023, even though the hardware barely changed. The number dropped because of how range was rated, not because of the battery. The bigger change came in May 2024, when a 320-mile Long Range RWD replaced the 260-mile Standard Range.
Why the 2024 range figures dropped
In early January 2024 Tesla re-rated its cars on its own website, cutting the Long Range Model Y from 330 to 310 miles and the Performance from 303 to 285, ahead of tighter EPA guidance on how manufacturers test and report range. The EPA's own entries for the 2024 model year are 310 miles for the Long Range AWD and 279 for the Performance. EPA also lists a "Long Range AWD-I" at 308 miles; we could not find what Tesla's suffix means.

For a used buyer this has two consequences. A 2024 is not a worse car than a 2023 because its sticker number is lower. And when you compare listings across years, remember that part of the 20-mile gap between a 2023 and a 2024 Long Range is a change in rating method, not a change in the car. Judge a specific car by its full-charge estimate on the screen.
Standard Range RWD or Long Range RWD

The Standard Range RWD launched in October 2023 at $43,990 and was built until May 2024. Electrek reported that it shared hardware with the later Long Range RWD and was limited to 260 miles in software, with Tesla discussing a paid range upgrade of 40 to 60 miles pending approval. Drive Tesla Canada had instead reported an LFP pack. Until you see the car, treat both its battery chemistry and its maximum home charging current as unknown.
The Long Range RWD that replaced it in May 2024 is the most efficient 2024: 320 miles for $44,990 at launch, 48 A home charging, and the 8-year or 120,000-mile battery warranty. For buyers who do not need all-wheel drive it is the version to hunt for. If a listing just says "RWD", ask for the build month and the full-charge range on the screen.
| Trim | EPA range | Efficiency | Home AC max | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RWD (Standard Range) | 260 mi | 28 kWh/100 mi | n/a | $43,990 |
| Long Range RWD | 320 mi | 28 kWh/100 mi | 11.5 kW | $44,990 |

| Performance AWD | 279 mi | 32 kWh/100 mi | 11.5 kW | n/a |
Quicksilver paint, a $2,000 option, arrived for the Long Range AWD and Performance in May 2024. Every US-built 2024 carries Hardware 4, no radar and no ultrasonic sensors.

Charging a 2024 at home and on the road
The Long Range RWD, Long Range AWD and Performance all accept 48 A. On a Gen 3 Wall Connector with a 60 A breaker that is up to 44 miles of range per hour, per Tesla. A 2024 battery size is not published by Tesla or confirmed in our sources, so we will not quote a precise empty-to-full time; if the pack is in the 75 to 79 kWh range that other Model Y years use, it would be roughly seven to eight hours.
| How you charge | Speed |
|---|---|
| Wall Connector at 48 A (11.5 kW, 60 A breaker) | up to 44 mi of range per hour |
| NEMA 14-50 outlet, Mobile Connector at 32 A | about 30 mi per hour |
| Regular 120 V outlet | 2 to 3 mi per hour |
Rates scale Tesla's published Wall Connector table for this model; older cars and cold batteries charge slower. Times are estimates.
What it costs per 100 miles at home, using EPA consumption and the July 2026 US average of 18.31 cents per kWh (EIA):
| Trim | kWh per 100 mi (EPA) | Cost per 100 mi |
|---|---|---|
| RWD (Standard Range) | 28 | about $5.13 |
| Long Range RWD | 28 | about $5.13 |
| Long Range AWD | 29 | about $5.31 |
| Performance AWD | 32 | about $5.86 |
Run your own rate through our per-kWh charging cost walkthrough. On the road, Long Range and Performance cars peak at 250 kW on V3 and V4 Superchargers; for third-party stations, see using a CCS adapter on a Tesla.
If you are installing for the first time, the electrician sets the Wall Connector to the breaker during commissioning, and the cost to have one installed is typically $750 to $1,500 by Tesla's estimate, before the $585 unit (as of October 2026). Hire a licensed electrician and pull a permit.

The 2024 is the last full model year of the original design. If you like the shape and want the longest-range rear-drive version, the 2025 Model Y rates its Long Range RWD at 337 miles; if HW4 is the priority on a tighter budget, a late 2023 Tesla Model Y may have it too. 2024 Model Y: quick answers
Why is the 2024 Model Y range lower than the 2023?
In January 2024 Tesla lowered the range figures on its own site, for example from 330 to 310 miles for the Long Range AWD and from 303 to 285 for the Performance, after a change in how the EPA expected range to be tested and reported. The EPA lists the 2024 Performance at 279 miles. The car did not lose battery capacity.
Does every 2024 Model Y have Hardware 4?
US-built 2024 Model Y have Hardware 4, since Tesla had finished phasing it in after starting in May 2023. It is still worth checking under Controls, Software, Additional Vehicle Information, especially on a car that sat in inventory or was built very early in the model year. None have radar or ultrasonic parking sensors.
What is the 2024 Model Y Standard Range RWD software limit?
Electrek reported that the Standard Range RWD sold until May 2024 used the same hardware as the Long Range RWD, with some battery capacity held back in software to give 260 miles, and that Tesla discussed a paid upgrade of 40 to 60 miles pending approval. We found no confirmation it was offered. Read the car's displayed range at 100%.
How much does it cost to charge a 2024 Model Y at home?
At the July 2026 US average of 18.31 cents per kWh, a Long Range RWD or AWD costs roughly $5.13 to $5.31 per 100 miles, based on EPA figures of 28 and 29 kWh per 100 miles. The Performance, at 32 kWh, is about $5.86. Your utility rate and time-of-use plan move these numbers more than the trim does.
What recalls should I check on a 2024 Model Y?
There are five. Four were software updates sent over the air. The one to see on the service record is 24V886000, where the weld joining the front seat recliner to the seatback could fail; the remedy is a replacement seat assembly. Also ask whether the car needed a new computer under 25V002000, the rearview camera recall.
