Three different cars were sold as the 2022 Tesla Model Y. The Long Range AWD is rated at 330 miles, the Performance at 303, and a 4680-cell AWD built only in Austin, Texas at 279. Within each, the build month decides whether you get parking sensors and whether a Mobile Connector came in the trunk.
That makes the 2022 the year where the window sticker matters more than the badge.
Three cars wore the 2022 badge
| Trim | EPA range | Efficiency | Home AC max | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AWD (4680, Standard Range AWD) | 279 mi | 27 kWh/100 mi | n/a | n/a |
| Long Range AWD | 330 mi | 28 kWh/100 mi | 11.5 kW | n/a |
| Performance AWD | 303 mi | 30 kWh/100 mi | 11.5 kW | n/a |

Long Range AWD. The default choice and the best of the three for most buyers. Range rose again, to 330 miles, and Edmunds clocked 4.8 seconds to 60 mph. It takes 48 A at home. Fremont cars use Panasonic 2170 NCA cells; the cell source for Austin-built Long Range cars is not confirmed in anything we found.
Performance AWD. Same 48 A charging and 250 kW Supercharger peak, with 21-inch wheels that cut the rating to 303 miles and raise consumption to about 30 kWh per 100 miles.
AWD (4680). Tesla's first structural-pack car, built in Austin from April 2022 and at first sold to employees, invited reservation holders and Texas buyers. Rated at 279 miles and 5.0 seconds to 60 mph. We cover its charging quirks below.
Prices are hard to compare because they kept rising through 2022: by late in the year the Long Range listed at $65,990 and the Performance at $69,990. Tesla then cut them hard in January 2023, which pulled used 2022 prices down with it. The 2023 Tesla Model Y page has the numbers.
Build-date changes that matter

- Screen computer and 12V battery. From about late December 2021, US-built cars switched from the Intel Atom media computer to AMD Ryzen and from a lead-acid 12V to lithium-ion. A very early 2022 car may still have the Atom. Check Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information.
- Ultrasonic sensors. Removed from October 2022 builds. Those cars depend on cameras for parking features, which Tesla listed as "coming soon" at the time.
- Mobile Connector. Not included for orders on or after April 28, 2022. Our page on Tesla's in-box charging kit explains what is in the box now.
- Interior. Later 2022 cars added wood door trim and manual rear-door backup releases, and some got a softer "comfort" suspension.
All North American 2022 cars are camera-only (no radar) and carry the HW3 Autopilot computer; Hardware 4 did not start until May 2023.
The 4680 AWD: cheaper, slower at Superchargers
The 4680 car is not defective, but it is different. In independent testing reported by InsideEVs, its Supercharging speed fell below 100 kW once the battery passed about 30%, well short of what a Long Range sustains. For a buyer who rarely road-trips that may not matter. For someone who drives across states it adds real time at every stop.
At home the picture is less clear. Tesla's service manual quotes 48 A for Model Y "when equipped with the Long Range Battery", and we found no Tesla document confirming the 4680 car's onboard charger. Before you size a circuit, tap the lightning bolt on the charging screen and read the maximum amps the car offers.

Source: NHTSA recalls API. A recall only applies if your VIN is listed.

Four needed a technician, and you should see each one on the service record or in NHTSA's VIN lookup:
- 23V385000, steering wheel bolt. Followed a 2023 NHTSA probe after two steering wheels came off cars that had been through an end-of-line repair without the retaining bolt. Covers some 2022 and 2023 cars.
- 23V130000, second-row seat back bolts not tightened to specification.
- 21V912000, suspension knuckles that could fracture.
- 26V507000, low beams too bright, fixed by replacing the headlights (August 2026, so often still open).
One software recall is specific to this generation's hardware: 22V296000, where the media computer could overheat during Supercharging and blank the rearview camera. It was fixed over the air.
The 2022 is also inside NHTSA's PE22-002 phantom-braking investigation, opened February 2022 for about 416,000 2021 and 2022 Model 3 and Model Y. NHTSA's ratings API counts about 867 owner complaints for the five-seat AWD; we could not pull the full file to rank them by system. Crash ratings are five stars in every category, with a 7.9% rollover risk.
| NHTSA test | Rating |
|---|---|
| Overall | 5 stars |
| Frontal crash | 5 stars |
| Side crash | 5 stars |
| Rollover | 5 stars |

Charging a 2022 at home
Long Range and Performance owners can use the full 48 A of a Gen 3 Wall Connector on a 60 A breaker, up to 44 miles of range per hour and about seven hours from empty to full. The current Wall Connector lists at $585 as of October 2026 and installation typically runs $750 to $1,500 by Tesla's estimate. Read our guide to setting up a Tesla wall charger for what the electrician will do, and hire a licensed one with a permit.
| How you charge | Speed |
|---|---|
| Wall Connector at 48 A (11.5 kW, 60 A breaker) | up to 44 mi of range per hour |
| NEMA 14-50 outlet, Mobile Connector at 32 A | about 30 mi per hour |
| Regular 120 V outlet | 2 to 3 mi per hour |
| Empty to full, largest pack (about 75 kWh) | about 7 hours at 11.5 kW |
Rates scale Tesla's published Wall Connector table for this model; older cars and cold batteries charge slower. Times are estimates.
If the car came without a Mobile Connector and you are on a budget, a 240 V outlet with Tesla's $300 Mobile Connector delivers 32 A. That is plenty for most commutes; compare the two in mobile charger vs Wall Connector. At 28 kWh per 100 miles and the July 2026 US average of 18.31 cents per kWh from the EIA, a Long Range costs about $5.13 per 100 miles to charge at home; a Performance, at 30 kWh, about $5.49.
What to check before you buy
- Window sticker or app details: Long Range (330 mi), Performance (303 mi) or 4680 AWD (279 mi).
- Build month: before October 2022 for ultrasonic sensors; after late December 2021 for Ryzen and the lithium-ion 12V.
- Service record shows 23V385000, 23V130000, 21V912000 and 26V507000 completed.
- A highway test drive with traffic-aware cruise control.
- Charging equipment included, if any.
- Battery warranty: 8 years or 120,000 miles from first delivery on Long Range and Performance, so cover runs into 2030.
If you would rather avoid the sensor question entirely, a 2021 Model Y always has them. The Model Y model-year changes hub shows how 2022 fits between them.
What 2022 Model Y owners and shoppers ask
What is the range of a 2022 Tesla Model Y?
The EPA rates the 2022 Long Range AWD at 330 miles, a figure matched only by the 2023 among original-design Model Y AWD cars, and the Performance at 303 miles. The Texas-built 4680 AWD, often called the Standard Range AWD, is rated at 279 miles. Expect less in winter and at sustained highway speed, and some gradual loss with age.
How do I know if a 2022 Model Y has the 4680 battery?
The 4680 car was built only at Giga Texas from April 2022 and was badged simply AWD, with a 279-mile rating. Look at the original window sticker or the Tesla app's vehicle details, check the full-charge range on the screen, and ask the seller for the factory. If the range at 100% sits near 279 miles rather than 330, you are looking at the 4680 version.
Does a 2022 Model Y have ultrasonic parking sensors?
Cars built before October 2022 have them. Later builds rely on cameras alone, and at the time Tesla listed Park Assist, Autopark, Summon and Smart Summon as coming soon on those cars. If you want the sensor-based parking distance display that earlier owners are used to, buy an earlier build and confirm the round sensors are present in the bumpers.
Did the 2022 Model Y come with a charger?
Only some did. Tesla stopped putting the Mobile Connector in the box for orders placed on or after April 28, 2022. Cars ordered before that date shipped with one. Every Tesla still comes with a J1772 adapter for public Level 2 stations. On a used car, ask the seller what charging equipment is included.
Is the 2022 Model Y affected by phantom braking?
It is in the scope of NHTSA's PE22-002 investigation, opened in February 2022 for 2021 and 2022 Model 3 and Model Y after 354 complaints of unexpected braking. Owners report it on this year often enough that it is worth a long highway test drive with cruise control engaged before you buy.
